Zen Shredding - Community Commitment
The Zero Ceiling Project is a partial benefactor of proceeds from the sale of the book Zen Shredding, a project that is near and dear to the heart of the author.
Throughout the winter season Zero Ceiling hosts small groups of at "risk youth" on the slopes for a day of snowboarding. These youth receive a lesson, equipment and a day pass and an opportunity to get exercise, fresh air and inspiration. They also learn about Zero Ceiling’s anchor program, the Snowboard Instructor Program, where selected youth have the unique opportunity to move to the mountains, be supported and work. These youth spend a week of intense training and learning in early December and are then interviewed for a job. They then move up to the mountains and are carefully supported. These youth begin with shadowing lessons, then completing a snowboarding certification course with the Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors and eventually teach full-time. At the end of the winter season when the Snowboard Instructor Program ends, the youth who choose to stay in the mountains are connected with summer employment options.
